At the turn of the year, a. hartrodt's sea freight customers can look forward to improvements – a restructuring of the ocean carrier alliances in international container shipping is imminent in 2025. "The market expects more reliable schedules, optimized capacity and higher operational efficiency in the short term," summarizes Brian Engholm Kristiansen, Head of Global Procurement at a. hartrodt. On February 1, Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd will launch the European "Gemini Cooperation". At the same time, the Asian "Premier Alliance" of HMM, Ocean Network Express (ONE) and Yang Ming Line will come into force. Brian Engholm Kristiansen considers the reorganization to be "significant".
MSC will compete alone against other alliances
From January 2025, the world's largest container shipping company MSC is planning a stand-alone network with an estimated capacity of over 6 million TEUs. By comparison, the Gemini Cooperation has a capacity of around 4 million TEUs, while the Premier Alliance is estimated to have approximately 3.3 million TEUs. Meanwhile, the Ocean Alliance of OOCL, Cosco Shipping, CMA-CGM and Evergreen Line with around 3.8 million TEUs has been extended until 2032.
